Don’t forget about cabbage as an option for a salad base. There are a ton of health benefits of cabbage, but most importantly, Cabbage has more vitamin C than oranges do per serving, is high in fiber and helps with brain function because of it’s high iodine content. The texture is thicker and hardier than lettuce and has a great distinct flavor which pairs well with ingredients you might not expect to find in a salad.
This recipe combines three unique flavors, giving the salad an Asian flair that pairs well with fish or chicken dishes. Enjoy it with a glass of white wine and tell me your thoughts.

This coconut soup is a variation of a recipe I had seen a long time ago that included peanut butter and was more of an Indian-influenced dish, but for this one I wanted a basic recipe that could be done in a short amount of time.
One thing I learned recently, is that some believe coconut to be a mild aphrodisiac. This being said, I think we know why piña coladas have become so popular. I will be sure to add more coconut to my recipes however possible.

This is a great cheap vegan salad that was inspired by a recipe book created by a naturopathic doctor here in Costa Rica. Salads are always a favorite of mine probably because of the rich, fresh taste of raw produce and the chance to play around with dressings. So, here is the adapted recipe. It’s easy, quick and delicious so don’t hesitate to make it and let us know what you think.

The other night, we entertained some guests and our friend whipped up some strawberry and banana crêpes with Nutella. They were simple to make and it was a great dessert rather than breakfast. Find the recipe and a little crêpe history here.

We hit another cheap food destination while on the Caribbean side last weekend. Bread and Chocolate. The restaurant and bakery is on a rustic porch similar to most restaurants in the area and unlike the usual weekend morning, there was a table open for us when we arrived. We settled on a fried egg sandwich (fried hard to my liking of course) served on a bagel with homemade home fried potatoes and an order of biscuits and gravy. Delicious!

There is this little place called La Botanica Organica, who has the freshest, most organic produce you can find around Puerto Viejo. We started off with cups of rich organic Costa Rican coffee and a cup of hot herbal tea with dried tropical fruit, lemon grass and other local herbs. Breakfast included of organic whole wheat pancakes with fresh pineapple topping, a free-range egg scramble with broccoli, onion, bell pepper and feta cheese with fresh baked whole grain bread (amazing!) and a bowl of fabulous granola and local yogurt with goji berries.

It’s rare for me to find a hummus that I don’t like and there are a million recipes out there for me to try. However, today’s hummus recipe is my very own, no recipe used, but inspired by a hummus I had when I first visited Costa Rica and found a Lebanese restaurant called Lubnan. This place is decorated really cool, gives off a nice vibe and has terrific food. It’s located on Paseo Colón just a few blocks down on the right hand side. However, this post isn’t about Lubnan since the prices don’t fit in very well with cheapfoodhere.com but the restaurant plays a huge role in the backstory on the fabulous hummus we had there.

The smell of oranges and cloves has always signified the Christmas season. Ever since I can remember my mom has pressed whole dried cloves into oranges and hung them around the house. I’ve certainly inherited my craftiness from her and this year have decided to mark the start of the holidays not with a Christmas tree or holiday tunes, but rather oranges with cloves. See how to do it here.

Making empanada dough correctly is the hardest part about the whole process of putting together the perfect empanada. I spent some long hours trying to get the dough just right; looking at every recipe on the internet I could find, and then some. it just so happened that I spent some time with an Argentinean chef at one of the beaches here in Costa Rica that we know. Once I talked to him about my recipe woes, my whole empanada world changed.
